7 Wonderful Private Schools in Houston for Elementary Students

As any parent knows, choosing the right school for your kids as they graduate from Pre-K and kindergarten is one of the most stressful decisions. After all, there are so many options, from homeschooling to charter, private and public school, and then so many choices even within those categories! You absolutely want to be sure to get your kids off to the best start. For many parents, a great option is the multiple private schools in Houston.

Private schools often have smaller class sizes, meaning more specialized attention for your growing learner, as well as advanced programs for parents with big dreams and aspirations for their children. Some private schools also offer a religious background for families that value incorporating their faith’s values into their child’s education. Regardless of your reasons for looking into private schools in Houston, I hope you check these great ones out!

The Branch School

The Branch School is a preschool–8th-grade private school that prides itself on its goal to inspire every student to “love, learn, and lead.” They approach education from a belief that all children have unlimited potential that’s just waiting to be brought out and nurtured, and this is reflected in several glowing reviews from parents. The school has a STEAM focus—taking great care to educate kids in the science, technology, engineering, arts, and math fields.

The Awty International School

The Awty International School was founded in 1956 and remains the only private school in Houston fully accredited by the French Ministry of Education. For world-trekking or multicultural families (like my own!), this is an excellent choice for multilingual kids. Or those who wish their kids to have a uniquely diverse and worldly educational experience. All Awty students work towards an International Baccalaureate or French Baccalauréat diploma. All along with an American high school degree, preparing their students for future success. The school begins at preschool and goes all the way through 12th grade. Meaning they can follow your child’s educational journey right from its beginning all the way to early adulthood.

The John Cooper School

The John Cooper School was founded in 1988 and has been educating kids in Houston in the 35 years since. The school has over a thousand students from preschool to 12th grade. They also boast accreditation from The Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS). Plus, they stay an active member of The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). They work to foster curiosity and a love of learning in students and take a holistic approach to caring for the whole student, not just their educational skills. The school’s mission is outlined like this “to provide a challenging education in a caring environment to a diverse group of select students, enabling them to become critical and creative thinkers, effective communicators, responsible citizens and leaders, and lifelong learners.” I love knowing that an educational environment is committed to making my kids into better people, not simply better students.

The Village School Private School in Houston

The Village School is a Nord Anglia School—one of the leading premium international school organizations—servicing greater Houston. They accept students on a rigorous set of admission standards, including standardized test scores and recommendations from educators at your child’s current school. The Village School educates students from preschool all the way to 12th grade. Additionally, The Village High School offers a variety of diploma tracks. They pride themselves on teaching students of all ages a global perspective and laying phenomenal foundations for elementary-age students to achieve educational success.

The Kinkaid School

Founded by Margaret Kinkaid in 1904, The Kinkaid School is the oldest non-sectarian co-ed private school in Houston. And second oldest in the state of Texas. They enroll students from preschool all the way to 12th grade. Additionally, very impressively, see 100% of their students accepted to accredited 4-year colleges and universities. I was so happy to read up on The Kinkaid School and see that they hold four core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and kindness. I’m sure that any parent wants to raise their kids to be honest, kind, respectful, and responsible adults, and I love knowing that their education can help instill those values at an early age.

SJS

Since 1946, St. John’s School has been making it their mission to “know, love, and elevate” each of the students that walk through their doors. They offer what they call a 13-year sequence of college preparatory training, taking students from their early education all the way through to high school. Like some of the other schools in this blog post, they received accreditation by the Independent School Association of the Southwest (ISAS.) As a school with a spiritual background, they also have chapel days at The Church at St. John the Divine for all students, which explore a number of topics.

Cypress Christian School

Cypress Christian School was founded in 1978 out of Cypress Bible Church. It makes an excellent choice for any families that hold a Christian faith as one of their values. The school offers education to children from kindergarten through 12th grade. They state their primary mission as “honoring the Lord Jesus Christ by providing students an education based upon academic excellence and biblical values.” They’re also part of the Association of Christian Schools International. This gives students many opportunities to apply what they’ve learned in their education as well as create a cultural impact. Most of all, it has overjoyed reviews from so many parents who truly love sending their children to Cypress Christian School.
